The Cynical Sheikh: Chapter One
San Francisco, California
Laura Toliver stepped off the elevator to the floor that housed Beatty Security. It was Saturday, not a day she normally worked, but after last night’s showing, she wanted to write her report while it was fresh and not have to wait until Monday. She had nothing else planned for the weekend. Writing the report would take an hour or so and then she’d be free.
There were other members of the team working and she waved to a couple of them as she passed. They were hunched over their computers or talking on the phone. Beatty Securities ran a full service bureau, with operatives and personnel on duty 24/7.
Her boss was in his office. He looked up as she passed the opened door.
“Laura?” he called.
She backed up and peeked in. “Yes?”
He stood and tossed a newspaper to the far edge of his desk. “Have you seen this?”
She entered the cluttered office and picked up the Life Style section of the San Francisco News. Her own face smiled back at her. Beside her stood Sheikh Yuusuf ibn Horah in all his gorgeous good looks.
“I remember when the photographer snapped it. I'd just finished the first circle of the museum and had joined Jenna and Yuusuf for a few minutes.” Laura placed the newspaper back on the desk. “Is there a problem?”
“Only if it gets out that you work for our security firm. We want unobtrusive surveillance at these events, not have every art thief around know what our operatives look like,” Ben said.
“There’s no problem, boss. As far as anyone knows, except Jenna and Yuusuf, I was a guest there like everyone else.”
“Hmm.” He seemed mollified and sat back down in his chair. “What’re you doing here today? After such a late night, I’d think you’d sleep in. Especially since it’s Saturday.”
“I wanted to get the report filed. I took some photos of a few individuals I want to do a quick trace on. Nothing specific, just vague feelings.”
Laura had worked for Beatty Security for three years. Her specialty was guarding museum pieces on display. She was available, as most operatives were, fo
Her primary function was to mingle at these events, keep an eye on the priceless artifacts and identify anyone who showed an undue interest in the items Beatty Security was hired to guard.
She had several discreet miniature cameras and easily took photos of anyone who merited a closer look. She was proficient in taking clear shots that allowed their facial recognition software to identify persons of interest.
“Don’t spend all your free weekend in the office,” he said.
She smiled and turned to head for her desk. “No worries there. It’s too glorious today to stay inside any longer than I need to. This won’t take long and then I’m off to Golden Gate Park for some bike time.”
When Laura reached her desk, she fished the miniature camera from her purse and uploaded the pictures onto her computer. She'd obtained the names of the people she photographed and quickly ran them through some of the standard databases available to compile a brief dossier on anyone a Beatty Security person thought needed watching.
She'd check these first before using the facial rec program. That could take hours and she wasn't waiting around on the off chance someone was not who they said they were.
Oh, oh, she thought a few minutes later. Warren Way, the older man she’d almost convinced herself was just very enthusiastic in his love of the Manas painting, had a rap sheet. Wasn’t that interesting? She printed his photo and the background results to circulate among the others in the company. If he attended future functions, he'd be on their watch list.
Her phone rang.
“Toliver,” she responded, beginning to input her report.
“Hey, Laura, go find your own guy,” Jenna Stanhope said, laughter in her voice.
“I should be so lucky to find one like Yuusuf. How did the photographer get my face and not yours? I could swear you were draped over Yuusuf like a serape all night,” Laura responded.
“Hah! We may be growing close, but we are circumspect. That’s why the speculation in the article that accompanied the photo—which I love. Who is the eligible bachelor after now? What a hoot.”
“There was more?” Laura asked. She’d only glanced at the picture. “What did it say?”
“Just gossipy speculation on the sheikh’s latest interest.”
“My boss is worried my cover will be blown.”
“Not with this article. It’s more like everyone in San Francisco will think you and Yuusuf are having a red-hot affair. I ought to be jealous.”
Laura laughed. “As if he’d even look at me when you’re around. He has eyes for you alone and you know it.”
“You never can tell,” Jenna said.
“Look, I know I warned you against him when you first started dating. He does have a reputation as a playboy, you know,” Laura said. “Rumor has it, he never dated a woman more than three times before dumping her. Until you.”
“Lies all of them. That’s what everyone says about fabulously wealthy men who aren't married. It goes with the territory. Although, he’s had a couple of bad experiences with women, but it wasn’t his fault.”
“Like what?” Laura wasn't sure she believed all Yuusuf told Jenna, but she was trying to keep an open mind. Her friend was crazy about the man.
“They wanted his money.”
That Laura could understand—he had to be worth billions. “Just be careful, okay? He looks to good to be true. I’m always leery about men like that,” Laura said.
“You’re leery about all men.”
“I am not. Just cautious. Anyway, since I’ve come to know him better, he seems to be a good guy.”
“Stop being cautious and be more like me and you’ll find your own good guy. If Mr. Right comes along, you won’t recognize him if you don’t give yourself a chance, and then where will you be?”
“I’m not sure there is a Mr. Right as you say. I’d settle for a Mr. This-is-as-good-as-it-gets,” Laura said wryly.
“You only say that because you haven’t met the love of your life yet. I think you’re too picky.”
“So does this mean you’ve met the love of your life or that you aren’t so picky?”
“I think I have,” Jenna said quietly.
“Yuusuf?” Laura sat up at that. Was her friend serious?
“He’s really all I could ever want,” Jenna said with conviction.
“You two haven’t known each other long enough to know that,” Laura argued.
“Haven’t you heard of love at first sight?”
“Have you heard of marry in haste, repent at leisure?”
Jenna was quiet for a moment. She’d been married at twenty-one and divorced eighteen months later.
“Oh, jeez, I’m sorry, Jens. I didn’t mean Phil. I meant don’t you rush into anything. If it’s the real deal, it’ll last forever, so why rush?”
Laura sometimes forgot about Phil. He’d been out of the picture for six years. Still, it had been a bad time for her friend and the last thing she wanted was to remind her.
“I still believe in love at first sight,” Jenna said stubbornly.
“I might, if I ever found it.” Laura had never been that in love. She dated, of course, and had had a steady relationship with a man when they were both in college. Shortly before graduation, they broke it off. She hardly suffered a pang, much less heartbreak.
She was twenty-eight now. Maybe she was destined to be like Jenna's Aunt Kendra, single at fifty.
She yearned to believe in love at first sight, to dream about meeting some man who would sweep her off her feet and carry her away. Have him convince her he had all the love in the world and wind up with a happy marriage and two or three children.
Each time she met a new man, she wondered if something would click.
Each time, she found they were entertaining or funny or intense. But there was never that spark that would light her fire.
“Yuusuf is taking me sailing today on the Bay. Want to join us?” Jenna asked.
“And be a fifth wheel? I don’t think so. You two have fun. Just take things more slowly, okay?”
“I don’t think he’s after my money. He has as much wealth as I do,” Jenna protested.
Jenna was from an old San Francisco family who started building the family fortune at the time of the California Gold Rush. Each generation had added to the coffers, including her software engineer father.
As an only child, Jenna was the sole heiress to the family fortune when her parents died. A fact Phillip had known and acted upon.
Laura knew her best friend had been blindsided that a man would marry her for money, and it had shaken her confidence.
Laura and Jenna became best friends in kindergarten—long before anyone in Laura’s family knew of the Stanhopes’s wealth. Their friendship had grown and survived high school and college. It continued strong and lasting despite their different lifestyles and circumstances.
“You do like him, right?” Jenna asked.
“Of course I do. He’s charming and fun to be around. I enjoyed talking with him last night while you were visiting with other friends. I don’t have anything bad to say about him, just be careful. I’d hate for you to fall for him and then find he’s only having fun while he works in San Francisco. Won’t he be returning home at some point?”
“I don’t know. Maybe he can continue to run their family office here and we can settle in the city.”
“Have your parents met him yet?” Laura asked.
“No. I want him all to myself for a little longer. I’ll introduce him soon. I don’t want their I-told-you-so’s if I’m reading things wrong. Or have Dad’s cross-examination ruin what we might have.”
Laura laughed. “Your dad’s just doing what dads do.”
For a moment Laura wished she had a father to act that way. Even her beloved grandfather was gone.
“I’ve got to get to work. Do you want to have dinner one night next week?” she asked, shaking off the sadness.
